2-13-16 sturgeon spearing season begins saturday

A record nearly 14,000 licenses have been sold for the sturgeon spearing season that gets underway this weekend on Lake Winnebago.  Paul Muche with Sturgeons for tomorrow says bitter cold temperatures this week have helped improve ice conditions and water Clarity.  Thousands of anglers have been putting up shanties and cutting holes as frozen Lake Winnebago becomes its own fishing community over the next couple of weeks.  “Its like it is every year.  It just gets crazy,”  Muche told WFDL news.  “You look out there (Lake Winnebago) Monday, Tuesday of this week and it seems like you go to work and all of the sudden there’s thousands of shacks out there.” Muche has been sturgeon spearing since 1982 and says there are big fish in the lake, if you are fortunate enough to find one.  Last year the harvest caps were reached after eight days.  DNR fisheries biologist Ryan Koenigs says this year it could go the full 16 days.
