1-18-19 grothman defends his vote against back pay for federal workers

Republican congressman Glenn Grothman is defending his vote last week against back pay for federal workers during the partial government shutdown.  Grothman was one of seven House members to vote against a proposal  to give federal workers back bay for unpaid work.   The measure passed 411- to seven.  Grothman says he was concerned that federal employees would be paid whether  they worked or not.  “I didn’t vote for the bill for a combination of  two reasons.  It didn’t solve the obvious problem of people working and not getting paid and it did say when this shutdown was over people who didn’t work at all get 100 percent of their back pay.  I don’t mind giving them something because its not their fault, but 100% seemed a little too generous,”  Grothman told WFDL’s Between the Lines program.  Grothman says he does support a bill that would pay roughly 420,000 federal employees who have been ordered to work without pay.  In the Sixth Congressional District that includes the U.S. Coast Guard and the Federal prison in Oxford.  Meanwhile the federal government shutdown is  in its fourth week.   Grothman says he supports president Trump for not backing down over his demand for $5.7 billion to help build a wall along the U.S.- Mexico border.
