2-8-19 state of the union: local reaction

Political observers say it remains to be seen if president Trump’s call for bipartisanship in his State of the Union address this week  becomes a reality. Retired Ripon College political professor Marty Farrell says in general he was impressed with the president’s speech.  “Overall I thought it was one his most effective speeches,”  Farrell told WFDL news.   At the same time Farrell says the president also stuck with some of his hard line partisan issues like the border wall and abortion.  Republican congressman Glenn Grothman says he applauds the president for recapping Republican achievements and laying out his agenda for the remainder of his term.  Grothman says the president is sometimes his own worst enemy when he tweets or makes offensive comments that aren’t part of the script. Looming over the president’s annual major address is the February 15 deadline for achieving a budget agreement to avert another government shutdown.
