11-12-19 fdl school board discusses new football stadium during workshop session

The Fond du Lac School Board will consider making a commitment to providing some financial support for building an artificial turf football stadium at Fond du Lac High School.  Following a workshop session Monday night the board agreed to vote at their next meeting whether to commit up to $1.5 million from the district’s fund balance if the remaining amount can be raised through private donations.  Superintendent Dr. Jim Sebert says the preliminary cost estimate for a stadium is  $4.4 million, and says  local donors have already expressed interest in contributing $750,000. Athletic director  David Michalkiewicz told the board he is confident that $3.75 million could be raised if  the board committed to the project.  The board did not agree to move forward with an indoor practice facility at  the high school at an estimated cost of $4.5 million.   Sebert says school administrators made a strategic decision not to bring this matter before  the school board to consider as part of the major building referendum.   “Those are topics that for whatever reason in Fond du Lac have been controversial and we didn’t want to confuse (voters),”  Sebert told WFDL news.  The nearly $98 million referendum was approved by voters last spring.  But several board members still expressed reservations about using the district’s fund balance to spend money on a district want, instead of a need.   Board members Jones,  Walk, Breister and Strand all expressed concerns about spending more tax dollars so soon after passage of  the building referendum.
